Ah, Instagram. When I’m not getting annoyed about people playing the follow/unfollow game and using bots to spam me with generic comments, I am quite fond of it. I’m not ashamed to admit that I regularly scroll through my own Instagram photos to remind myself of how damn amazing my life is, and although my account is still very small (1.6k followers), I find it interesting to see which posts perform the best!
I know it’s pretty late to be writing about 2016 when we’re almost halfway through 2017 but 2016 was the best year of my life, so why wouldn’t I want to write about it? I spent a whole year living and working in South East Asia, and the beautiful beaches I visited deserve a bit of recognition…plus, it’s my blog so I can do what I want 😉
So, without further ado, let’s take a look at my top 10 most popular Instagram posts!
1. Rufus and the garlic butter, Koh Rong. Likes: 147
It fits that the number one spot goes to Rufus because this little munchkin made my year. He was (and still is!) my favourite thing about South East Asia, and not a day goes by when I don’t miss him. This handsome boy was my best friend on Koh Rong, and I used to love coming into work at 7.30am just to see his little face and his bum wiggle. This particular night, he’d found a bucket of garlic butter that the Khmer boys used to make garlic bread for the BBQ, and he’d taken it hostage while he licked it clean. Thankfully, the tub was pretty much empty when he stole it, as I dread to think what eating a whole bucket of the stuff would have done to him!
2. My accidental fiance and our matching shirts, Koh Rong. Likes: 126
You know how it is: you kiss a cute Cambodian boy and the next day, he presents you with a ring and tells his whole family that you’re getting married in 3 month’s time. Wait, you don’t know how that is?! This story is far too weird and complicated to try and explain in a paragraph, so let it suffice to say that Cambodian dating is very different to Western dating and involves matching t-shirts, lots of insisting that ‘no, we’re not engaged and we’re not going to have a baby!’ and, lots of rice.
3. Kissing an anaconda in Bali. Likes: 123
Nope, this is not a picture of me and my ex boyfriend. This is an anaconda I met at Tanah Lot temple in Bali. I’d tagged along with a few people from my hostel to visit this temple at sunset, and although the temple itself was beautiful, my personal highlight was definitely getting to hold this beauty. I love snakes, and any chance I get to interact with them or learn more about them, I take.
4. Raccooning around in Malaysia. Likes: 117
This picture was taken at an insect farm in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Why did they have raccoons at an insect farm, you ask? I couldn’t tell you. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about Asia, it’s that nothing makes sense and you’re better off just smiling and accepting the weirdness rather than trying to figure it out. Despite how cute this little guy and his friend were, it was kinda sad seeing them as their enclosure was very small and was pretty much exactly how it appears on the picture. I didn’t quite understand this, as the butterflies and insects all seemed to have more than adequate environments, but unfortunately, the raccoons seemed to have pulled the short straw 🙁
5. 4K beach, Koh Rong. Likes: 112
This beach was just a 30 minute walk from my home on the island of Koh Rong, Cambodia. I didn’t visit it too much during my first 6 months on the island as my local beach was also beautiful (and 10 minutes away!), but in my last couple of months there, I visited all the time as some friends had opened a beach bar there so it was a treat to go and visit them and relax in the sea with a cold beer. That, and the dogs that lived in the bar I worked in loved the jungle walk there, and so it was lovely to make the trip every couple of days and relax in these beautiful surroundings.
6. My first (and only!) rainbow of 2016, Koh Rong. Likes: 111
This picture was taken at the very beginning of 4K beach, just in front of Nest Beach Club. It was my first visit to this new bar, as they were having a Day of the Dead party and all my friends were going. With views like this, how could anyone complain?
7. Rufus digging for crabs, Koh Rong. Likes: 109
This was taken on one of many beach days with my main man, Rufus. He’d walk with me through the jungle, swim with me in the sea, and curl up and sleep next to me as I sunbathed. He also loved digging holes, sometimes because he’d seen a crab hole and other times just for the hell of it. Again, this was taken on 4K beach.
8. Sunrise in Ukraine. Likes: 108
I wasn’t supposed to be in Ukraine for longer than an hour but after a nightmare with my flights (which you can read about here), I ended up staying the night there and seeing this incredible sunrise when I returned to Kiev airport. The picture really doesn’t do it justice but it goes some way to showing what a beautiful morning it was in the Ukrainian capital.
9. Koh Phi Phi. Likes: 104
Koh Phi Phi is one of my favourite places in South East Asia and my ultimate guilty pleasure. It’s touristy, trashy and about as far away from Thailand culturally as you can be but I still love it. I love how everything is in walking distance and the hostels are never more than a stone’s throw from a beach like this. I love the cheap massages and even cheaper curries. Most of all, I love how happy everyone is here. Koh Phi Phi has a real holiday vibe and all everyone wants to do is relax and have fun.
10. View from my balcony on Koh Rong. Likes: 104
I stayed at Seahouse Guesthouse for about 6 weeks when I first arrived on Koh Rong and although I later moved to somewhere cheaper, I used to love waking up to this view and the sound of the waves. Every morning, when I walked around the wraparound balcony to go and clean my teeth in the bathroom, I’d look out at the fishing boats and blue skies and think about glad I was that I’d left the UK and moved somewhere as beautiful as this!
So here we have my top 10 most popular Instagram posts of 2016! Of course, most of them are from Koh Rong – not only is it incredibly beautiful but it is also where I spent 9 months of the year, and thus where the majority of my pictures were taken!
