Level8 Luggage Review: Are Level8 Suitcases Worth the Hype?

As someone who has spent the last decade dragging backpacks, soft-shell carry-ons and various broken wheels around Europe and Asia, I finally accepted defeat: it was time to suck it up and get a proper suitcase.

Level8 is a New York–based luggage brand founded in 2008, known for making suitcases that are as stylish as they are durable. They specialise in hard-shell luggage, using German Makrolon® polycarbonate, which is lightweight, tough, and water-resistant. The brand operates out of the US but also has warehouses in Europe, meaning quick shipping if you’re in the UK like me.

Their whole thing is minimalism, durability, and ‘luggage that lasts,’ and that’s exactly how these products feel.

Unboxing & First Impressions

I’m not someone who usually gets excited about packaging, but opening these felt fancy.

Both suitcases arrived inside cotton dust bags, which instantly made the experience feel more premium than any luggage I’ve bought before (it’s also going to be great when it comes to storing them). 

The cases have a clean, minimalist design, and although they felt heavier than what I’m used to, that’s mainly because I’ve only ever travelled with soft-shell bags and backpacks. In reality, the weight is similar to other hard-shell brands – just with sturdier materials.

The navy shade is sleek, but I do wish Level8 offered more colours. They bring out limited editions occasionally, but overall the colour selection is pretty limited, and I did struggle trying to find something that went with my personal style (petition for tan or khaki please, Level8).

This is the main selling point: a lightweight but incredibly tough shell that’s water-resistant, easy to wipe clean, and has an anti-scratch surface. These cases are built for travellers who don’t want to replace their suitcase every year.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that these wheels glide like butter.

The 360° spinner wheels roll smoothly in any direction – forwards, backwards, sideways, full spin – and they still work well even on the uneven streets where I live. TSA locks mean security can inspect your suitcase without cutting anything open, protecting both your luggage, and your belongings inside.

4. Wide Telescopic Aluminium Handle

The handle extends to multiple heights and feels sturdy, but the best part is how wide it is. This design means there are no bars running through the inside of the suitcase, giving you a completely flat packing surface. This was an absolute game-changer for me.

5. Interior Organisation

Inside, you get:

• A zippered mesh compartment on each side, that also compresses everything nicely
  
• Extra pockets on the left side, including a waterproof pocket for toiletries
  
• A soft cloth divider
  
• Plenty of space thanks to the flat interior base

Level8 offers a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty covering the shell, wheels, handles, and zippers. It’s important to note that this doesn’t cover accidental damage or misuse (no luggage warranty does), but it’s reassuring to know the essential components are protected.

Real-World Performance

My cases arrived just in time for my Jet2 trip to Cyprus, so I decided to take the 28” check-in case with me to see how it fared.

Here’s what stood out to me:

• The wheels are genuinely next-level. Even on cobblestones, train platforms, carpets, or uneven pavements, they glide effortlessly.
  
• The hard shell feels robust and premium. I didn’t spot any dents, cracks, or scuffs on my return.
  
• The weight is manageable – not featherlight, but in line with other durable hard-shell suitcases.
  
• Packing is easy because the interior is flat and everything stays contained behind the mesh panels. I didn’t cram the case full, but even so, nothing had moved when I opened it up.
